Colophon

Since Counterfoil examines tools to determine what they do, where they stop, and how easily you can stop using them, the same questions apply to our website.

Software

  • WordPress, the free software the site runs on, which has its own record in the catalogue.
  • Hosting on WordPress.com, by Automattic.
  • The Counterfoil theme, a custom child of Ollie by Mike McAlister.
  • Jetpack, Jetpack Boost, Akismet, Gravatar Enhanced, Page Optimize, and Layout Grid, all by Automattic. Several of these come with WordPress.com hosting.
  • The Gutenberg plugin, for the newest editor features, ahead of them being introduced in WordPress core.
  • Blogroll & Podroll Block by Matthias Pfefferle, for the blogroll.

Built here

Five plugins come from this site’s own workshop: Counterfoil Catalogue, which holds the tool records and draws the threshold scale; Borges Bibliography Builder, which formats the sources; Keel, for safer and saner defaults; Maestro, for editing the admin menu; and First Person, which automatically shows a byline only on posts written in the first person.

Type

Atkinson Hyperlegible, designed for the Braille Institute to be easy to read at any vision level, and IBM Plex Mono. Both are open fonts, served from this site.

How to exit

  • Readers. Nothing here needs an account. To follow along without email, add the research feed or the catalogue feed to any feed reader.
  • Subscribers. Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom, and one click ends it. Subscriptions are kept by WordPress.com, where you can also manage them from your account.
  • Anyone who comments or writes to us. Ask, and we will delete what you sent: comments, messages, and plugin nominations. How long we keep each, and how to ask, is on the Privacy page.

We can easily leave too. Everything here can be exported from WordPress in an open format and moved to another host. The writing, records, and sources are ordinary posts and pages; the plugins built here are free software.
